Joanne McGowan slaps Nuwandart with Rude Awakening

Local celebrity Joanne McGowan will bring her new show, Rude Awakening, staring Joanne McGowan and Coleen Pyke to Nuwandart located at 258 “A” St, on Friday, May 2nd at 9pm & Saturday, May 3rd at 2pm.  The new show is about waking up in the morning to an end of the world alert, and the various processes that are prescribed by the Homeland Security Agency to prepare for the end.  The show was inspired after the events of 9-11 when Joanne realized we were living in a state of fear perpetuated by the media, that every time she watched, listened, or read something from the mainstream media it was preparing us for the end of the world, whether it be a security stage orange, or Ebola, smallpox, or weapons of mass destruction, that the end is coming soon and we should just cower in fear..  She decided that something needed to be done to wake up society to the fact the in trying to protect ourselves from these dangers, real or fabricated, we are giving up the civil liberties that make this country what it is.  Joanne stated that much of the material for the show came directly from the Homeland Security Website (www.ready.gov) which she credited as a great source of inspiration.  The show premiered during the Environmental Film Festival sponsored by Siskiyou Projects, which Joanne supports because of their work in the Illinois Valley.

In creating the script Joanne wanted to create a feeling of hope, and to convey a positive and empowering message, as opposed to another message of fear and negativity.  “The humor of the show was very important and that seemed to come pretty naturally but the serious side of the show I really struggled with” stated McGowan.  She created a song to fit into the end of the show called We Are the Solution where she hands out a sing-a-long sheet and the audience joins in.  She then videotapes the audience singing which she will then send to our Congressmen, Senators, and President.  Hopefully they’ll listen to it and maybe catch themselves humming this little tune as they walk down the halls of the White House.  “I want the show to be proactive, maybe the video tape will send our energy and spirit to our legislators” said McGowan.  Joanne’s newly formed company, Super Hero Theater’s motto is, “It’s never to late the save the world”, and she hopes that the audience will walk away feeling that they can and must make a difference.  Super Hero Theater will donate $1 of each ticket sold to the Ashland High Theater Arts Department, and Nuwandart will donate an additional $1 for each ticket sold to the Ashland Middle School Art program.  Tickets are $7 each and are available at The Northwest Nature Shop, Music Coop, and Mobius Media Center.  Advanced tickets are highly recommended as seating is limited.  The Friday evening show starts at 9pm with doors opening at 8:30, the Saturday matinee is at 2pm with doors opening at 1:30.  For more information please call 941-9799.
