"Grant & Matheny are intense listeners, sometimes anticipating and instantly echoing ideas, yet always weaving one fabric."  -- Stereophile

Since their debut at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 1996, GRANT & MATHENY have performed over 100 concerts annually on tour. The chamber jazz duo explores the lyricism, the swing, and the soul of songs, ranging from jazz to classical, spirituals, folk songs, and standards. Dmitri Matheny (San Francisco, California), flugelhorn, and Darrell Grant (Portland, Oregon), piano, are classically trained jazz artists who achieve a magical level of heartfelt communication rarely experienced in larger ensembles. They take listeners on an inspired musical journey, capturing the playful, spontaneous spirit of American jazz, re-inventing European art songs, and interpreting sacred and secular works from around the world.

The duo of Portland OR. pianist Darrell Grant and Bay area fluegelhornist Dmitri Matheny made their debut at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1998. Since that time the two have brought their blend of intricate interaction, risk-taking improvisation, and heartfelt communication to audiences
throughout the US. "Our goal is to take our listeners on a journey that celebrates the spontaneous spirit of jazz, and the soul of songs," says Darrell. "For us it is about the creative spirit, and intimacy with our audience." Together Grant & Matheny explore the lyricism, swing, & beauty of
songs from the jazz tradition; re-invent, and re-cast classical art songs; and bring their own interpretations to a repertoire of spirituals, folksongs, and standards.
