"Killian's Wake"
What sort of person plans a thinly-veiled "birthday party" for himself, promotes it as a "concert" and invites the paying public to attend? Avant-guitarist, composer, improviser, Ted Killian that's who. He's turning 50 this month and has invited some of his favorite musical friends to come play with him and help commemorate the occasion.
Killian is hardly a known quantity in the Rogue Valley. But in the circles of "avant garde" music in coastal Southern California (where he moved from just 6 years ago) he's a lot better known — especially since the debut of his first solo CD "Flux Aeterna" in 2001 on the pfMENTUM label.
Killian may keep a low, public profile locally, but he travels south frequently (to the Bay Area, and further) to perform with a wide range of edge-cutting musicians, poets and artists traversing a great many musical boundaries along the way.
However, for his 50th birthday, he's "bringing the party home" by inviting a number of visiting and local musician-colleagues to come perform with him at something he's calling "Killian's Wake" at the Ashland Community Center on May 24th. The performance is scheduled for 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Seating is limited, so an early arrival is recommended.
The general admission ticket price for the event is $7.00 (but this is discounted to $5.00 if you bring Ted a birthday card). This modest admission is charged only to defray the traveling expenses of the out-of-town musicians (some of whom are flying in for the occasion). Many of the participants will also have their own CDs for sale. Coffee and birthday cake will be made available too.
Among the "luminaries" coming to play with Ted are: Avant-jazz trumpeter/maestro Jeff Kaiser of Vinny Golia's Band (from Ventura, CA); Classical and Jazz trumpeter with the Rose City Chamber Orchestra, Garen Horgen (Portland, OR); Liz Stuart, "world music" vocalist/percussionist with the group "Vocolot" (San Francisco, CA); Doug Heydon, acoustic and electric bass multi-stylist (Eugene, OR); Author and beat poet, JT Gillett (Ashland, OR); Plus, one of the busiest musicians in the Rogue Valley, drummer, Mike Fitch (of Ashland, OR); and quite probably even a few more!
Though he has been heard on California stages and dozens of radio stations from Lithuania to Australia, Ted himself is rarely heard locally. However, many of his "friends" are NEVER heard here. This coming Memorial Day weekend — if you are open to something VERY different — this is your chance to experience a kind of creative musical performance that is totally unprecedented for the Rogue Valley. This is a mix of free-jazz, folk, world-beat, ambient, electronic, rock, and other textures that nearly defy description. Chances are, you won't get another chance for another 50 years.
